The Powder Monkey

Harry dreams of going to sea in Admiral Nelson's fleet. But one day, delivering supplies to a ship, he is accidentally hit on the head. When he wakes, it's dark - and his dream has become a nightmare.

Excerpts

Suddenly, the air filled with the roar of the cannons of both English and enemy ships as they fired at each other.
The gun crew's first shot boomed out and the great cannon threw itself back in recoil. At the same moment, a splintering sound came from above as chain shot from the enemy wrapped itself round their rigging, Part of the mast came crashing to the deck. Harry saw it hit a crew member. He stood transfixed, wondering what to do. "Move, powder monkey!" The gun captain kicked at him savagely.

Through the gloom, Harry saw boxes, sacks, barrels and huge coils of rope. Then he spotted a dozen or more creatures gathered around him. Rats! He kicked out wildly and waved his arms. They scurried away behind the barrels. Fear made him breathless. He tried to calm himself. He wished the floor would stop moving. Something was terribly wrong.
